Well, well. It turns out we middle aged ladies are catching up in the Social Media World.

Yeah, you keep checking, but there is nothing new here. Go to sandydrain.wordpress.com. That is where all the action is.

There are other good uses for Social Media besides becoming a Social Media Darling! Check out this fun post from a fellow blogger.

How to Use eHow to Turn Yourself into a Comedic Force to Be Reckoned With Great news! I’m funny now! Here’s what happened: I was Googling “How to write a thank you letter for a present that boggles the mind– seriously, what is this thing?”, and my fervent Google prayers were answered by eHow.com. If you’ve never heard of eHow, it’s a website where contributors write articles on how to do things. Often these are very helpful thi … Read More

One fun thing about having a blog is the spam comments you get. WordPress does a great job of filtering the spam and notifying bloggers that certain comments are unlikely to be genuine. I love that because some of them are pretty slick and I might spend several minutes trying to decode its meaning or even clicking on the attached link.

I don’t mind the spam comments much yet, because they aren’t offensive. If anything, they are amusing and, hey, someone commented on my blog!

The Social Media Darling just gets more and more social! I am taking WordPress up on their offer to help me blog every week. Between this blog and sandydrain.wordpress.com, I intend to blog more frequently in 2011. The new blog will cover a variety of topics and styles, while this one will remain Social Media centered.

I have to go to Toronto for a week. It’s a working trip, but I think there are opportunities to find some fun, no matter how small. So, among my other preparations, last night, I finally figured out how to use my phone to Tweet. This week, the Social Media Darling is going really start trying to live up to the title by Tweeting my trip.

If anyone can tell me how to find the “|” symbol on my phone’s QWERTY keyboard, I will post to my blog as well, but that might be a project for another trip.

For now, follow me at http://twitter.com/sandydrain. My Twitter feed also appears at the bottom of the screen.

For a Social Media Darling in training, I have been a bit slow about joining and understanding the realm of possibility. For some reason, I have been reluctant to join Twitter. Mainly, it is because I think that it is all I can do to come up with a weekly Facebook status and blog entry, let alone a daily, succinct, useful, and, ideally, witty Tweet. Frankly, so far, it appears a lot like Babel to me. I don’t understand the language, and even when I do recognize the words, I don’t know what people are talking about!

But, all that is going to change. Today, I got inspiration from good old CBS Sunday Morning when they did a report on Andy Borowitz. His story is fascinating (click on the CBS Sunday Morning image to see it) and his website is hysterical.

What it all comes down to is that he is ridiculously absurd and there is nothing I like more. He is responsible for the title of this blog entry. If that doesn’t make you dissolve into tears from laughing so hard, don’t follow him on Twitter!

I wonder if there is a formula for generating Tweets for the slow times. Bloggers have Plinky, an idea generator for writing topics. There are a million websites for stealing clever Facebook status updates. What is a Tweeter to do? Find out at http://twitter.com/sandydrain

So, last week, I wrote, what I thought was a killer blog post. It had EVERYTHING. It had a catchy title. It was error free to the best of my knowledge. It had imagery. It had links. It had tags. It had all the things WordPress suggests to help make it a “Freshly Pressed” feature. It was even quite the timely topic. I felt good when I wrote it.  I felt good when I published it. I was flying high. I thought, “YES! I have arrived. Six weeks of blogging and they will have no choice but to feature ME!”

And then, I went into a dream state fantasizing about the fanfare that would ensue. It was a LOT like this.

I could barely sleep in anticipation of logging in to WordPress and responding to no less than 10,000 comments. I was already working on my “I’m sick and can’t come in to work” voice.

I gotta tell you. It didn’t happen.

The utter disappointment cannot be conveyed in words.

It is not like when I wake up on Sunday morning and am genuinely surprised that I did not win the Powerball … again. I think I know that isn’t really going to happen.

It was more like pouring my heart out to my one true love and getting a response like, “I’m sorry, do I know you?”

All this fame and glory seeking wasn’t just for me. I really wanted my topic to get out. I really wanted to spread the word about Scholastic’s “You Are What You Read.” I think this is super cool.

My consolation is that this is one of the blogs http://seattlelunchbox.wordpress.com/2010/11/09/pecan-sandies/ that beat me. I don’t quite understand it all, but I can’t resist the association between pecan sandies and “Grease.”

I am also pleased that Scholastic liked the piece and my loyal lurkers are quite supportive as well. Thanks for reading and keeping me going!

Finally, I am on the cutting edge of SOMETHING in the Social Media world! Today, I got to attend the Blogwell conference which presented “8 Great Case Studies on the Best Social Media Programs at Large Corporations.” I thoroughly enjoyed it and I was especially entranced by the presentation by Scholastic who have not only embraced traditional social media channels toot sweet but have gone so far as to roll out their own platform … You Are What You Read. And, they launched it quite recently. It is so recent that my online research links to blog after blog that simply restate the press release.

If anything might lure non-believers to the Social Media realm, I like to think it would be You Are What You Read. It is a social network that ties users together through books.  Particularly through their “bookprints” which are composed of “the five books that influenced you most.”

Are you thinking about your five yet? Is To Kill a Mockingbird one of them? You are not alone. So far, it is the top listed book on the network. It is the first book I thought of, but I left it off my list since there are so many and it is getting proper credit so far.

I think it is a bit intimidating to rattle of just five books that influenced my entire life, but I chose five. All of them were in the database. I believe they can be edited when I realize I have forgotten something. My motivation for making my selections was to find out who else likes my choices and to get lost in the book links web. HOW does “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing” link to “Grapes of Wrath?” I don’t know. But, I think it will be fun finding out. And of course, I was hoping to find that I have something in common with one of the 130 “Names You Know” – celebrities and authors who have helped kick-start the program (Neil Gaiman, where are you?)

Scholastic is a great example of the “old world” mashing up with the new. I fondly remember bringing home my Scholastic book order form from school and choosing a book or two…can I have three? It is a great program whose mission is “helping children around the world to read and learn.” They have been doing it for 90 years. I am hoping this new direction will help them continue to do it for many more.

Notes: Go to the site to find my bookprint. You can log in using your existing Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Google, LinkedIn or MySpace account, or register with Scholastic. There is a an adult network and a youth network.

Just Jesse on photobucket

Daylight savings time begins this weekend and I can’t help but feel giddy at the idea of an extra hour of sleep. Lately, I have been feeling a little bit tired from keeping up with not only life in general, but my new found enthusiasm for learning all things in the social media world. I mean, it has been exhausting! There is so much to learn and so much to read. It is at work, at home, and everywhere. The nice thing is that having a mission that is so enjoyable keeps me coming back for more and makes it easy to appear to be one of those tireless, focused people I can never figure out.

Those kinds of people remind me of my Jack Russell Terriers. My Rosie awakens every day so excited. She thinks “today could be a big adventure.” Sometimes she is right, but inevitably, it is the same as the previous day. My Ollie thinks everything is an adventure – especially when I sweep the floor.

As energetic as they are, they pale in comparison to Jesse, a Jack Russell Terrier, a canine actor and a Social Media Doggie Darling. He puts Rosie, Ollie and me to shame! Now, it isn’t Rosie and Ollie’s fault. They have lazy humans who don’t bother to train and publicize them. But me, I have no excuse to be out Darlinged by a dog.

Let’s compare. I have a blog. Jesse has a blog. Jesse even has someone to write his blog for him.  I have a Facebook profile with 111 friends. Jesse has a Facebook page with 485 likes. And, why not? He is ADORABLE! I have about five email accounts and Jesse has ONE, justjesse197@yahoo.com. Finally, I am ahead. Well, actually, in dog email, that would be like seven email addresses, so, on second thought, he wins again. So far, I haven’t found him on Twitter, but so far, I haven’t gotten around to Tweeting either. We tied in that arena. But, here is where Jesse emerges victorious in the competition for Social Media Darling… he has a website and best of all, a YouTube channel with over 6,400 followers!

While I am trying to get up to speed, enjoy some videos from Jesse:
